An Overview of Home Health Aide Jobs

Sadly, the struggling economy has hit many people hard, some to the point of losing jobs, homes, vehicles, and more. While some economic stability has been seen in the past year, we all know that there is still a long way to go. Because of so much uncertainty, people have started to focus on a few specific industries and sectors that seem to weather even the harshest storm. Even people who were not affected by the recent recession are now considering different careers, those with stability and better salary earning potential.

Although several industries and sectors have done relatively well during these rough economic times, one in particular not only survived, but actually thrived. In fact, this sector pushed right through all the economic ups and downs, coming out on the other side with an incredibly bright future. What sector are we talking about? Healthcare, a sector that offers hundreds of unique career opportunities from Home Health Aide jobs to Neurosurgery careers.

The Foundation of Home Health Aide Jobs

Getting started with one of the many Home Health Aide jobs offers a number of different benefits. For one thing, this type of career makes the perfect stepping stone to bigger and better things. Because this type of aide reports directly to a highly skilled, qualified, and licensed healthcare professional such as a Registered Nurse or Physical Therapist, the person interested in the medical field could use this particular job as a foundation on which to learn and build.

Another benefit of working Home Health Aide jobs is that no formal education or training is required. To be honest, the more reputable and larger organizations, agencies, and medical professionals would give consideration to a person with healthcare experience, training, or education, none of this is mandated to work as a Home Health Aide. This person would simply need to be 18 years of age or more, have a high school diploma, and be a citizen of the United States.

Of course, to be in a better position of being seen as a serious candidate for Home Health Aide jobs, an individual might want to consider taking basic medical and healthcare courses offered at junior or communication colleges, vocational institutions, and nursing schools. Even with basic knowledge, getting hired would be easier but for the person, getting started within any Home Health Aide jobs would be a relatively seamless process.

Examples of Duties Performed

For Home Health Aide jobs, all sorts of duties need to be performed in an effective and safe manner to maintain the patient’s dignity. While there are far more responsibilities than those listed below, these provided a quick look at what an aide of this type offers.

  • Accompany a patient to a doctor’s appointment
  • Provide the patient with transportation to run errands, have testing performed, to visiting family members and/or friends, etc.
  • Administer prescription medication, change surgical dressings, help the patient with various types of medical equipment
  • Prepare and assist with baths, grooming, meals, and various daily hygiene functions
  • Spend time with the patient, offering a massage, reading a book, or simply visiting
  • Maintain patient care records specific to type of care provided, time provided, patient’s condition, medical changes whether progression or regression, concerns, and more
  • Provide support and assistance in getting the patient in and out of bed, into the bathtub, sitting in a chair, and getting into the car
  • Care for a disabled patient’s children while under the Home Health Aide’s care

Patient Types

Home Health Aides provided healthcare and personal care to a variety of patients. For instance, services are offered to people that are terminally ill, those recovering a major accident, individuals with permanent and temporary disabilities, adults and children with mental impairments, the elderly, convalescent patients, and more. For success, some level of training and education would be highly recommended specific to the type of patient and care being provided.

Not that many years ago, a pregnant woman would be admitted to the hospital, give birth, and five days later, go home. Today, a pregnant woman goes into the hospital and within 23 hours, is released. The same thing was seen with people that suffered a heart attack. After having major open heart surgery, it would often be weeks before the individual was allowed to leave the hospital but now, most patients barring any complications, are sent home within a week.

This means people around the country are going home after having surgery or overcoming some kind of illness or injury much earlier than ever before. As a result, a family member or friend would be required to take time off from work to offer care. Obviously, that person would likely lose income during this time, not to mention schedules and responsibilities that would be disrupted. Within a short period, everyone feels stressed, which only makes the situation worse.

Thanks to the various types of Home Health Aide jobs, a scenario such as this would be completely different. Once the patient arrives home, a skilled healthcare professional in the form of a Home Health Aide would arrive to provide medical and personal care, assist with daily needs such as hygiene, dressing, administering medication, taking vital signs, changing surgical dressings, and often, cooking meals, running errands, cleaning house, and more.

Because Home Health Aide jobs are specific to certain needs, they are often referred to as “direct nursing jobs”. Regardless of the name, the individual would possess the necessary skills and knowledge to be of great assistance.

What the Future Holds

All types of nursing jobs are currently in great demand but need is anticipated to grow. For one thing, baby boomers are now reaching the age bracket in which medical care is needed for chronic and acute conditions. In addition, as shown in the scenario above, a significant amount of patients are being released from the hospital to finish healing at home. Then, with most families being dual income providers, this leaves no one to stay at home to care for a loved one that is ill, recovering, or under the care of hospice.

Of course, with Home Health Aide jobs offering a perfect foundation on which to learn, it is no wonder that the future looks amazing. The most recent statistics released specific to Home Health Aide jobs is that this one healthcare career alone will see a 50% increase between the years 2008 and 2018. However, there are actually other experts that strongly believe this increase is too low. At any rate, the need for qualified, compassionate, dedicated, and caring Home Health Aides is not going away any time soon.
